David Sacks, former AI and crypto czar for Donald Trump's administration, transitions to co-chair of PCAST.

David Sacks has stepped down from his role as Donald Trump's special government employee focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrency. Speaking with Bloomberg News on Thursday, Sacks confirmed that he will now co-chair the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), a federal advisory body that studies issues related to science and technology.

From AI Czar to PCAST Co-Chair

In his new role, Sacks will be much further removed from the direct policy-making process. As AI czar, he had access directly to President Trump and played a significant part in shaping policies related to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain.

“I think moving forward as co-chair of PCAST,” said Sacks during his interview with Bloomberg via video call, “I can now make recommendations on not just AI but an expanded range of technology topics. So yes, this is how I’ll be involved moving forward.”

A Diverse Advisory Body

PCAST has a long history dating back to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s administration in 1945. However, Sacks emphasized that the current iteration boasts “the most star power of any group like this” ever assembled.

The council currently includes notable figures such as Jensen Huang from Nvidia and other prominent industry leaders who bring a wealth of expertise across various technological domains to the table. This diverse mix ensures comprehensive coverage of emerging trends in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and beyond.

Continuing Influence on Technology Policy

While Sacks will no longer have direct access to the White House or be involved in crafting specific policies, his new role still offers significant opportunities for influencing broader technological directions. PCAST’s recommendations often serve as a blueprint for future government actions and can set important precedents.

“The council is not just about making reports,” explained Sacks. “It's also about shaping the discourse around these technologies so that when policymakers do make decisions, they're informed by the best available science and technology.”

A Visionary in Tech Policy

Sacks has long been recognized as a visionary leader within both tech startups and venture capital circles. His experience spans from founding companies like Yammer to investing through firms such as Founders Fund, where he continues his work alongside prominent figures like Peter Thiel.

“David Sacks brings unparalleled expertise in technology policy,” said Michael Kratsios, the senior White House technology adviser who will co-chair PCAST with him. “His deep understanding of both private sector innovation and public policy makes him an invaluable asset to our efforts.”

This transition marks a new chapter for Sacks in his ongoing journey at the intersection of technology, business, and government. As co-chair of PCAST, he will continue to play a crucial role in shaping how America approaches some of its most pressing technological challenges.
