America's Window Cleaning Robots Are Winning a Battle Against Hype
The founder of Lucid Bots explains why his company is succeeding where others struggle, focusing on practical performance over flashy demos.
Andrew Ashur, founder and CEO of Lucid Bots, is no stranger to the challenges faced by robotics startups. While many companies in his field are preoccupied with creating human-like robots or dazzling public demonstrations, he has a different approach: focusing on delivering tangible results that matter most.
The Antithesis of Robotics Hype
Lucid Bots specializes in full-stack robotic solutions designed to make traditionally unglamorous and potentially dangerous tasks like window cleaning safer and more efficient. Unlike the flashy demos seen at tech conferences, Ashur emphasizes practical performance on job sites.
Ashur told TechCrunch that while many robotics companies are still selling "a lot of hype and headlines," Lucid Bots is focused on delivering real-world results. “We sell performance on the job site, which shows up in our customers’ profits,” he said.
The company’s Sherpa drones and Lavo robot have been designed to address specific needs within cleaning companies. By automating repetitive tasks such as window washing, Lucid Bots aims to reduce labor costs while improving safety for workers who might otherwise be exposed to hazardous conditions.
From Lab to Job Site
Ashur’s background in robotics and his experience with the industry have shaped Lucid Bots’ approach. “We’re not just in the lab or simulators,” he said, noting that their drones are out on job sites every day. "We’ve got dirt under our fingernails." This hands-on approach has helped them understand the real-world challenges faced by cleaning companies and develop solutions accordingly.
Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Lucid Bots recently secured a $20 million Series B round of funding co-led by Cubit Capital and Idea Fund Partners. The investment brings their total raised to $34 million, enabling them to scale operations and meet growing demand for their robotic solutions.
Scaling Up with Demand
Ashur acknowledged that the company has been inundated with requests for demos but is struggling to keep up due to high demand. “We have more requests than we can handle,” he said, adding humorously, "we’ve run out of parking spots at our manufacturing facility." This underscores Lucid Bots’ success in a market where many competitors are still trying to find their footing.
The company plans to use the new funding for hiring and expanding its operations. With more staff on board, they can meet customer needs faster while continuing to innovate and improve their robotic solutions.
