A multibillion-dollar data center project nears completion, signaling Google's and lenders' commitment to supporting AI infrastructure as competition heats up.

Google is preparing to support a multibillion-dollar data center project near Houston, Texas, leased by Anthropic. The project, operated by Nexus Data Centers on an expansive 2,800-acre campus, could exceed $5 billion during its initial phase of development. According to reports from the Financial Times, Google plans to provide construction loans for this ambitious infrastructure venture.

A consortium of banks is also vying to arrange financing by mid-year, indicating a significant level of interest in backing Anthropic's expansion efforts. Early-stage debt financing has already been secured through Eagle Point, a publicly traded closed-end investment company. The site is expected to deliver approximately 500 megawatts of capacity by late 2026, which would be equivalent to powering around half a million homes.

The data center's location near major gas pipelines operated by companies such as Enterprise Products Partners, Energy Transfer, and Atmos Energy positions it well for efficient energy use. On-site gas turbines will allow the facility to generate power locally, reducing reliance on external grid sources while potentially lowering operational costs.

Competitive Landscape in AI Infrastructure

The move by Google into this large-scale data center project is part of a broader race among tech giants and startups for dominance in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Anthropic's lease agreement with Nexus Data Centers forms part of its ongoing strategy to build out robust, scalable computing resources necessary for running complex AI models.

Google’s involvement comes at a time when competition within the sector has intensified. Other major players like Microsoft, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and even smaller firms are investing heavily in data center expansions and improvements aimed at providing cutting-edge infrastructure to support advanced machine learning applications.

The financial backing for Anthropic’s project underscores the critical role that reliable AI infrastructure plays. With Anthropic recently signing a lease, construction is already underway with early-stage debt financing from Eagle Point. The site's potential to expand up to 7.7 gigawatts further highlights its strategic importance in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.

On Thursday, US federal judge Rita Lin granted a preliminary injunction temporarily blocking the Pentagon’s directive that would have restricted government use of Anthropic’s AI tools due to national security concerns. This ruling came after Anthropic filed suit against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for overstepping his authority in designating them as a supply chain risk.

The judge described the government's actions as "arbitrary" and warned against branding US companies as threats without proper justification, underscoring the ongoing legal challenges facing AI firms. While this injunction provides temporary relief to Anthropic, it also reflects broader concerns about the regulation of emerging technologies in a rapidly changing technological environment.
