A new venture capital fund, Zero Shot, has raised $100 million and is focusing on generative artificial intelligence startups.

A new venture capital fund named Zero Shot has recently closed its first round on the $100 million goal it set out to achieve. The founders are former members from OpenAI who have now transitioned into becoming venture capitalists, a move that highlights their deep understanding and commitment towards generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI).

Key Founding Partners

The founding team of Zero Shot includes Evan Morikawa, Andrew Mayne, Shawn Jain, Kelly Kovacs, and Brett Rounsaville. Each brings a unique set of skills and experiences to the table:

  • Evan Morikawa was previously the head of applied engineering at OpenAI during its groundbreaking projects like DALL·E and ChatGPT.
  • Andrew Mayne is recognized for his work as an original prompt engineer at OpenAI, also known for hosting The OpenAI podcast. He has since founded Interdimensional, a consultancy focused on AI deployment.
  • Shawn Jain transitioned from being an engineer and researcher at OpenAI to becoming both a venture capitalist and the founder of Synthefy, his own Gen-AI startup.

Kelly Kovacs joins Zero Shot with extensive experience as a founding partner at 01A, while Brett Rounsaville brings expertise from roles at Twitter and Disney. Together they form an experienced team poised to invest in promising AI ventures.

Focus on Generative Technologies

The fund's name "Zero Shot" is not just playful; it references the concept of zero-shot learning, a critical aspect within artificial intelligence where models can perform tasks without being explicitly trained for them. This reflects Zero Shot’s ambition to support startups that are pushing boundaries in AI research and development.

Investment Strategy

The partners have already made their first investments since the fund's inception. Their strategy is centered around identifying early-stage companies working on cutting-edge technologies within the realm of generative artificial intelligence, with a particular emphasis on those that can demonstrate significant potential for real-world impact.

Industry Impact

The establishment of Zero Shot marks an important milestone in the growing ecosystem surrounding AI and machine learning. By leveraging their collective expertise from OpenAI, these founders aim to accelerate innovation within this field while fostering a supportive environment for emerging talent.
