The Future of AI Innovation: Proprietary vs Open Models
A diverse ecosystem of AI models is crucial for powering every application, as NVIDIA's CEO explains at GTC.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just an emerging technology; it has become integral to business operations across industries. As we move towards a future where every application will be powered by some form of AI, the debate over whether this should happen through proprietary or open models becomes increasingly irrelevant.
NVIDIA's Perspective on Open Frontier Models
At NVIDIA’s GPU Technology Conference (GTC), CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that the dichotomy between proprietary and open innovation is outdated. He stated during a special session, “Proprietary versus open is not a thing. It’s proprietary and open.” This perspective underscores the importance of embracing both approaches to drive AI innovation.
NVIDIA has long been committed to fostering an ecosystem where diverse models can thrive. The company now boasts nearly 4,000 team members on Hugging Face, making it one of the largest organizations contributing to this platform. At GTC, NVIDIA announced a groundbreaking initiative: the Nemotron Coalition—a global collaboration aimed at advancing open-source foundation models through shared expertise, data, and compute resources.
The Nemotron Coalition
One of the first projects underpinning the Nemotron Coalition is a base model co-developed by Mistral AI and NVIDIA. This collaborative effort involves contributions from coalition members in terms of data, evaluations, and domain expertise to support post-training development and ongoing refinement.
The significance of this project cannot be overstated; it represents a new era where open-source models can benefit not only the creators but also the broader community. The model will eventually find its way into future Nemotron iterations, which have already been downloaded over 45 million times from Hugging Face. This underscores the growing demand for accessible and versatile AI tools.
Panel Discussions at GTC
The announcement of the Nemotron Coalition was followed by a series of panel discussions featuring leaders in both building and consuming open models. These sessions provided valuable insights into how different organizations are leveraging these technologies to address specific business challenges across various industries, including healthcare, finance, and manufacturing.
One notable aspect highlighted during these panels is the collaborative nature of this approach. By pooling resources from multiple stakeholders—ranging from tech giants like NVIDIA to smaller startups—the Nemotron Coalition aims to accelerate progress in AI research while ensuring that advancements are accessible to a wider audience.
