Hiring for passion and scrappiness, not just pedigree, has helped Bland grow from pre-seed to Series B in 10 months. Learn how their unique approach can benefit your startup.

Isabelle Johannessen recently sat down with Isaiah Granet, CEO and co-founder of Bland, a voice AI company that has rapidly scaled from pre-seed to Series B funding within just 10 months. The journey is not only about technology but also the human element behind it—specifically, how passion trumps traditional qualifications in building an exceptional startup team.

Passion Over Pedigree

Bland’s early hires were selected based on their enthusiasm and dedication to coding rather than conventional educational backgrounds. Granet recounts a pivotal hire that exemplifies this philosophy: “We spent months searching for our founding engineer, but the person we ultimately chose had an unconventional path.” This individual started his career in insurance before moving through various roles including managing at Taco Bell and working on factory floors.

Granet explains how they discovered him: "The thing that got me was not his tech skills. We asked what he did for fun, and I’ve never seen a bigger grin than the one on his face when he said, ‘I like to ship code.’” This candid approach allowed Bland to identify talent outside of traditional hiring pipelines.

Building a Diverse Team

Beyond coding skills, Granet emphasizes that Bland’s team is built around individuals who are passionate about their work and share the company's vision. From philosophy majors to beekeepers, each member brings unique perspectives and experiences that contribute to innovation within the organization.

Granet elaborates: “We look for people with a genuine passion for what they do, regardless of where it comes from or how unconventional it might seem on paper.” This inclusive approach has allowed Bland to attract talent across various disciplines, fostering an environment rich in diverse ideas and creativity.

The Path Forward

As Bland continues its rapid growth trajectory, Granet advises other startups to adopt a similar mindset: “Hire for passion first. If someone is genuinely excited about the work they do, it will show through their dedication and innovation.” This philosophy not only helps in finding hidden gems but also ensures that every team member feels valued and motivated.

Granet’s advice resonates with many entrepreneurs who are looking to build high-performing teams quickly. By focusing on passion over pedigree, startups can tap into a broader pool of talent and create dynamic environments where creativity thrives.
