The German government's rigorous evaluation paves the way for Apple devices to be used by NATO nations with classified data.

Following an extensive evaluation by Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), Apple has announced that its iPhone and iPad models are now approved to handle classified information in restricted environments within NATO nations. This marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time consumer devices have achieved such stringent government certification.

Security Standards Met

The approval comes after rigorous security testing of iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 by BSI. These operating systems are now recognized for their ability to meet NATO nations’ exacting operational and assurance requirements, ensuring that iPhone and iPad users can handle classified information up to the NATO restricted level without needing any additional software or settings.

Apple’s commitment to security is evident in its design philosophy, which integrates sophisticated protections across hardware, software, and Apple silicon. Key features like best-in-class encryption, biometric authentication with Face ID, and Memory Integrity Enforcement are all part of this comprehensive approach. These same robust security measures have now been validated by BSI as meeting the necessary standards for government use.

Previous Certifications

The journey to NATO approval began when Apple’s devices received initial certification from Germany in 2019, following an evaluation by BSI. At that time, iPhones and iPads were approved for handling classified German government data using native iOS security measures. This earlier success laid the groundwork for today's broader recognition.

With this new approval, iPhone and iPad users can now access sensitive information in restricted environments across all NATO nations without any additional steps or configurations. The seamless integration of these devices into secure workflows is a testament to Apple’s dedication to providing reliable security solutions that meet international standards.
