The founder of Uber is expanding his tech empire into robotics, focusing on specialized industrial robots for food and mining industries.

Travis Kalanick, the co-founder and former CEO of Uber, is making a significant move into the realm of industrial automation. His latest venture, Atoms, aims to transform industries such as food production and mining through specialized robots designed for efficiency on an industrial scale.

The Shift from Ghost Kitchens to Industrial Automation

Kalanick’s new company is a natural progression from his previous enterprise. Atoms will integrate CloudKitchens, Kalanick's existing ghost kitchen operation, into its broader robotics strategy. While the specifics of how this integration will play out are still unclear, it suggests that Kalanick sees potential in leveraging automation to streamline operations across multiple sectors.

According to The Information, a leading tech news publication, Atoms is not just stopping at food and mining; they also plan to venture into transportation. The company’s website describes its mission as building a “wheelbase for robots,” indicating that Kalanick envisions a versatile platform capable of supporting various types of industrial robotics.

Specialized Robots vs Humanoids

In an interview with TBPN Live, Travis Kalanick emphasized the focus on specialized robots rather than human-like machines. He stated, “Humanoids have their place, but there’s a lot of room for specialized robots that do things in an efficient, sort of industrial-scale kind of way.” This approach aligns with current trends in robotics where companies are increasingly focusing on task-specific solutions to address the unique challenges faced by different industries.

While Kalanick is clearly positioning Atoms as a player in this space, it remains to be seen how his background in ride-hailing will influence its development. The company’s website makes no mention of Uber or any other transportation-related ventures, suggesting that Kalanick may have broader ambitions for Atoms beyond just leveraging existing technologies.

Self-Driving Vehicles and Acquisition Rumors

In a related development reported by The Information, it was revealed that Kalanick is also getting back into self-driving vehicles. The publication claims he has “major backing” from Uber, though the company did not immediately respond to requests for comment. According to sources close to the matter, Kalanick wants to be more aggressive in rolling out autonomous technology than Waymo, which currently leads this space.

Additionally, there are rumors that Atoms is considering acquiring Pronto, an autonomous vehicle startup focused on industrial and mining sites. This move could potentially bolster Atoms’ capabilities in the transportation sector while also providing a platform for further innovation within its robotics portfolio.
