Discover how Google is leading the tech industry towards sustainability by integrating recycled materials into its products, from Pixel phones to Nest devices.

Google has taken significant strides towards sustainability by incorporating more recycled and renewable materials into their products. This initiative not only aligns with environmental goals but also sets new standards for tech companies worldwide. The Pixel 10a phone stands out as a prime example, featuring a remarkable 36% of its weight in recycled components.

From Plastic to Rare Earth Elements

The commitment extends beyond just plastics; Google now tracks the overall recycled content by product weight across all hardware. The Pixel 10a phone is one such testament where materials like aluminum, cobalt, copper, gold, tin, tungsten, and rare earth elements contribute significantly.

Setting Industry Standards

In a bid to push for broader industry adoption of recycled content, Google has released the Recycled Materials Guide. This comprehensive resource offers insights into integrating various materials such as plastics, aluminum, stainless steel, cobalt, copper, gold, tin, tungsten, and rare earths.

Recycling Ambitions

In 2019, Google set an ambitious goal to incorporate recycled materials in every new consumer hardware product. They not only met this target early but also raised the bar by aiming for at least 50% recycled or renewable plastic content in their products starting from 2020.

Progress and Future Goals

The progress has been steady, with nearly half of the plastics used in product manufacturing in 2025 being recycled. This not only reduces waste but also supports a circular economy by promoting the use of sustainable materials throughout their lifecycle.
