The team behind Cove, an innovative collaboration board startup backed by Sequoia Capital and Google veterans, is moving to Microsoft amid product shutdown.

The team behind Cove, an AI-driven collaboration board that aimed to revolutionize how teams work together, has announced its departure as it shuts down operations. In a message sent to users on March 28th, Cove informed subscribers of the shutdown and confirmed that all user data will be deleted by April 1st.

Background: A Startup with Big Hopes

Cove was founded in late 2023 by Stephen Chau, Andy Szybalski, and Mike Chu. These founders brought a wealth of experience to the table; they were previously involved in developing features for Google Maps such as Street View. The startup secured $6 million in seed funding from notable investors including Sequoia Capital, Elad Gil, Homebrew, Adverb, Scott Belsky, and Lenny Rachitsky.

Product Overview: An Infinite Whiteboard with AI

The core of Cove’s offering was an infinite whiteboard that utilized artificial intelligence to generate different blocks for tasks such as trip planning. Unlike the chat interfaces offered by competitors like Miro or TLDraw, Cove believed its canvas provided greater flexibility when users needed to explore various prompts and ideas.

Users could leverage a built-in browser within the platform to access additional resources, import PDFs, and even add images for context. This capability allowed AI-generated content to be enriched with real-world data, leading to more dynamic and useful collaboration tools.

The Competition Landscape

Cove positioned itself against established players in the market such as Miro, TLDraw, and Kosmik. These companies have long been seen as leaders in digital whiteboard solutions for teams looking to brainstorm or plan projects collaboratively online.

Despite its promising start, Cove faced challenges that ultimately led it to this decision. The founders felt that while the chat interface was useful, a canvas-based approach offered more flexibility and creativity when users needed to pivot their ideas mid-session.

The Microsoft Move

In an email sent on March 28th, Cove announced that its entire team is joining Microsoft as part of this transition. The company stated it will shut down the service by April 1st while ensuring all user data is deleted to protect privacy and security.

Additionally, Cove has refunded all subscriptions for March and offered a process for exporting users’ remaining data. This move reflects not just an end but also a strategic shift in how Microsoft sees collaboration tools evolving within its ecosystem.
