The Future of Business Software: An AI-Driven Interface
A new startup, Eragon, is betting on agentic AI to transform enterprise software into a prompt-based system, potentially eliminating traditional user interfaces.
Josh Sirota’s vision is to revolutionize how businesses operate by eliminating traditional software interfaces. His startup, Eragon, has just secured $12 million in funding at an impressive valuation of $100 million post-money, aiming to build what he calls an “agentic AI operating system” for enterprise customers.
From Oracle and Salesforce to Eragon
Sirota’s journey from working on go-to-market teams at tech giants like Oracle and Salesforce has led him to question the very nature of software. He believes that as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, traditional user interfaces—such as buttons, dialog boxes, and pull-down menus—are becoming obsolete.
“Software is dead,” Sirota asserts. “In a world where AI can understand natural language prompts, businesses will interact with their software through simple commands rather than complex UIs.”
The Agentic AI Interface
Eragon’s approach involves integrating large language models (LLMs) to provide an agentic interface for enterprise applications. The company aims to offer a suite of business tools—such as Salesforce, Snowflake, Tableau, and Jira—through this new prompt-based system.
“Imagine being able to ask your CRM directly about customer insights or having your financial analytics tool respond to questions in natural language,” Sirota explains. “This is the future we’re building.”
A Visionary Founder’s Perspective
Sirota, who founded Eragon with a small team from his live-work loft across the street from San Francisco Giants’ baseball park, shares that he experienced something of a mid-career crisis before launching this venture. The dining room table in their workspace is adorned with a bottle of Moët, Mac minis, and a copy of Eragon, the Christopher Paolini fantasy novel which inspired his company’s name.
“Just like Palantir or Anduril drew inspiration from fictional worlds,” Sirota says, “we’re taking cues from the future as depicted in science fiction to shape our reality.”
The Market Opportunity and Challenges Ahead
Eragon is not alone in its quest. Other companies are also exploring AI-driven interfaces for enterprise software. However, what sets Eragon apart is its ambitious goal of creating a fully integrated agentic system that can handle multiple applications seamlessly.
“The challenge lies in making sure the AI understands context and provides accurate responses,” Sirota acknowledges. “But with advancements like those seen from LLMs such as Anthropic’s Claude, we’re getting closer to realizing this vision.”
The Future of Business Technology?
If Eragon succeeds, it could mark a significant shift in how businesses operate and interact with technology. The idea of an agentic AI interface is not just about convenience; it promises more efficient workflows and better decision-making through natural language interactions.
As Sirota looks to the future, he remains optimistic: “We’re at the dawn of something big here. Eragon isn’t just a startup—it’s a movement towards a new era in business technology.”
