The social media giant reverses its decision to shut down support for its virtual reality app, ensuring continued access via Quest headsets.

Meta has announced that it will continue to provide virtual reality (VR) support for its social metaverse app, Horizon Worlds. This decision comes as something of a surprise after earlier indications suggested the company would discontinue VR access. The news was shared by Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth during an Instagram Stories Q&A session with fans.

From Contemplation to Continuation: A Shift in Strategy?

The reversal is significant, as it marks a departure from what had been planned for the app. In March of this year, Meta announced that Horizon Worlds would transition exclusively to web and mobile platforms by June 15th. However, just days before its scheduled shutdown, the company reversed course.

The decision is not without context. Since rebranding from Facebook in October 2021, Meta has faced numerous challenges with its Reality Labs division, which was heavily invested in VR and AR technologies. The division’s losses have been substantial; it reported a $73 billion loss since the rebrand.

Early Adopters Rejoice

The continued support for Horizon Worlds on Quest headsets is likely to be seen as good news by early adopters and enthusiasts who have been using the platform. Bosworth’s announcement came in response to a fan who expressed concern about losing access, stating they were “heartbroken” at the prospect.

Matt Johnson, an analyst with research firm Gartner, commented on Meta's decision: "While it might seem like a small victory for VR enthusiasts, this move could signal that Meta is reconsidering its approach to the metaverse. The company has been under pressure from investors and analysts who have questioned whether their heavy investment in Reality Labs was worth the financial strain."

Implications for the Metaverse

The decision underscores a broader debate within tech circles about the future of VR as a social platform. While Horizon Worlds may continue to exist, it remains unclear how much longer Meta will pour resources into developing and promoting its metaverse vision.

"This is an interesting pivot," said Sarah Smith, a technology journalist with TechCrunch. "It shows that even in the face of financial challenges, there's still value in maintaining certain aspects of VR for social interaction. However, it also raises questions about whether Meta will continue to prioritize this space given its broader strategic focus."

For now, Horizon Worlds users can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that they won't be forced out of the virtual world anytime soon.
