Grab Acquires Foodpanda Taiwan for $600 Million, Expanding Beyond Southeast Asia
The Southeast Asian delivery giant grabs a foothold in Taiwan's competitive food delivery market after Uber’s failed attempt.
Grab, the Southeast Asian delivery giant known for its expansive network across multiple countries in Asia, has announced it will acquire Foodpanda’s operations in Taiwan for $600 million. This move marks a significant step as Grab seeks to expand beyond its traditional stronghold of Southeast Asia into new markets.
A Strategic Move Amidst Regulatory Scrutiny
The acquisition comes roughly one year after Uber Technologies abandoned plans to acquire Foodpanda’s Taiwan operations in March 2025, citing regulatory hurdles. At the time, both Uber Eats and Foodpanda were major players with significant market shares; a recent report indicated that Foodpanda held approximately 52% of the Taiwanese food delivery market between 2022 and 2023.
Regulatory concerns over reduced competition and potential price hikes led Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission to block Uber Eats’ bid. This time, Grab is facing similar scrutiny but with a different approach. The Singapore-based company aims to complete the transition of users, merchants, and driver-partners onto its platform by early 2027.
Market Dynamics in Taiwan
The Taiwanese food delivery market has been fiercely competitive since Foodpanda’s entry into the country in 2014. The company quickly gained a significant user base before facing challenges from Uber Eats, which entered the market later but managed to carve out its own substantial share.
According to recent data, Foodpanda maintained a dominant position with around 52% of the market during the period between 2022 and 2023. Meanwhile, Uber Eats held approximately 48%. The combined presence of these two giants in Taiwan created an environment where any new entrant would face formidable competition.
Regulatory Approval and Future Prospects
The deal is currently pending regulatory approval from relevant authorities in both Grab’s home base, Singapore, as well as the Taiwanese government. If approved, it will be a landmark acquisition for Grab, significantly bolstering its presence in one of Asia's most dynamic markets.
Grab has stated that it plans to integrate Foodpanda into its existing ecosystem over time, ensuring smooth transitions and minimal disruption for users and partners alike. The company believes this move could position them as the leading player in Taiwan’s food delivery market while maintaining healthy competition with Uber Eats.
