Amazon expands its robotics portfolio by acquiring Fauna, a startup developing kid-friendly humanoid robots, as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to innovate in home automation and entertainment.

Amazon has taken another step in its quest to diversify into cutting-edge robotics technology with the acquisition of Fauna Robotics. The two-year-old startup was founded by former Meta and Google engineers who are dedicated to developing kid-friendly humanoid robots. This move comes just weeks after Amazon acquired Rivr, a Zurich-based autonomous robotics company known for its stair-climbing delivery robot.

Building Capable Robots

Fauna’s first product, the 59-pound bipedal robot named Sprout, was launched earlier this year to select research and development partners. The acquisition signifies Amazon's commitment to expanding its robotics capabilities in a way that could enhance both home automation and entertainment for children.

Amazon's Vision

In an emailed statement, an Amazon spokesperson expressed excitement about Fauna’s vision: "We are excited about Fauna’s vision to build capable, safe, and fun robots for everyone. Together with Amazon’s robotics expertise and decades of experience earning customer trust in the home through our retail and devices businesses, we’re looking forward to inventing new ways to make our customers’ lives better and easier."

The integration of Fauna's employees into Amazon's New York City team will bring a wealth of knowledge from the tech giants that originally nurtured their careers. This move is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to innovate in home automation, entertainment, and even education through robotics.
