The holiday season is often associated with festivities, family gatherings, and indulgence. However, this period can also have a significant impact on our physical health and wellness. Recent data from Fitbit provides valuable insights into how the holidays affect us, offering practical advice for planning your health goals in the coming year.

A Slower Pace: Reduced Physical Activity

One of the most striking trends observed in the Fitbit data is a significant decrease in physical activity during Christmas Day and New Year's Day. On average, users took 1,750 fewer steps on December 25 and 1,500 fewer than their yearly average on January 1.

Sleep Patterns: A Mixed Bag

While the overall sleep duration increased over the holidays by nine minutes, there was a notable decline in sleep quality. On Christmas Eve (December 24) and New Year's Eve (December 31), users went to bed later than usual, resulting in reduced sleep times of 17 and 26 minutes, respectively.

Heart Rate Variability: A Sign of Fatigue

The Fitbit data also revealed a concerning trend in heart rate variability (HRV). This measure indicates how well the body is recovering from physical activity. On December 25, HRV decreased by an average of 11%, and on January 1, it dropped by as much as 18%. These findings suggest that our bodies are indeed feeling the strain of holiday celebrations.

Planning for a Healthier New Year

Now that the holidays are over, users can take advantage of Fitbit's features to set new health goals and track progress. Eligible users can try setting a personalized step goal in the Fitbit app or explore the new personal health coach feature (currently available in Public Preview). This tool allows users to compare their trends with others in similar demographics and gain insights into sleep statistics.

By understanding how our bodies respond during the holiday season, we can take proactive steps towards a healthier year ahead. Whether it's setting realistic fitness goals or prioritizing self-care, these findings offer valuable lessons for planning your health and wellness objectives in 2024.
