The Biden Administration's PCAST: A Tech Heavy-Hitter Panel Overlooks Scientists
A new list of appointees to President Joe Biden’s science advisory council, PCAST, has been released, revealing a panel dominated by wealthy tech figures at the expense of scientific expertise.
The Biden Administration’s President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) has finally unveiled its list of appointees. This move comes nearly eight months after the inauguration, marking an unusual delay for such a high-profile advisory body. The appointments have raised eyebrows due to their heavy emphasis on technology industry leaders rather than scientific experts.
Missing Scientists in PCAST
The newly appointed members include prominent figures from Silicon Valley and beyond: Marc Andreessen of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, Sergey Brin co-founder of Google, Michael Dell founder of Dell Technologies, Larry Ellison CEO of Oracle Corporation, Jensen Huang CEO of NVIDIA, Lisa Su CEO of AMD, and Mark Zuckerberg CEO of Meta. These individuals bring significant financial clout to the table but may lack direct scientific expertise.
Notably, PCAST still has nine unfilled positions as of now, leaving room for potential changes in composition. However, given that these appointments were made by an administration known for its skepticism towards science and technology regulation, it is unlikely that more scientists will be added to the council anytime soon.
The absence of scientific voices on PCAST has sparked concerns among advocates who believe in evidence-based policymaking. Critics argue that relying solely on tech industry leaders could lead to policies favoring corporate interests over public welfare and innovation driven by broader scientific research.
A Background Check: The New Members
Among the newly appointed members, David Sacks previously chaired PCAST under President Trump before joining as a member of Biden’s council. John Kratsios, who now heads the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), has also been named to this role.
Fred Ehrsam co-founded Coinbase, an influential cryptocurrency exchange platform, while Safra Catz is another well-known figure from Oracle Corporation. David Friedberg rounds out the list as a seasoned investor with extensive experience in venture capital firms.
While these individuals bring valuable business acumen and industry insights to PCAST, their lack of scientific background could limit the council’s ability to provide balanced advice on complex technological issues that require deep scientific understanding.
