Volkswagen and Uber Begin Testing Autonomous Microbuses in Los Angeles
VW subsidiary MOIA America and ride-hailing giant Uber are testing autonomous electric minivans in LA, a key step towards launching their robotaxi service by late 2026.
Volkswagen subsidiary MOIA America and ride-hailing giant Uber have commenced testing of their fleet of autonomous microbuses in Los Angeles. This marks the first phase towards launching a commercial robotaxi service using electric ID Buzz minivans across multiple U.S. cities by late 2026.
Initial Testing Phase
The pilot program will begin with around ten driverless vehicles operating on select routes in Los Angeles over the next few weeks, according to MOIA America president Paul DeLong. These electric minivans are designed for four passengers each and represent a significant step forward in autonomous vehicle technology.
Joint Operations Facility
To support this initiative, MOIA America and Uber have established a joint operations center in Los Angeles dedicated to managing the day-to-day fleet activities of these self-driving vehicles. This facility will play a crucial role as they scale up their testing efforts over time.
Scaled-Up Testing Plans
Volkswagen has indicated that while initial tests involve only ten autonomous ID Buzz minivans, the fleet size is expected to grow significantly. The company aims for a future deployment of over 100 such vehicles as they refine their technology and gather more data.
Market Selection
The choice of Los Angeles as the first city for this pilot program underscores its reputation as an early adopter of innovative transportation solutions. Paul DeLong highlighted LA's long-standing influence on car culture alongside its openness to new mobility technologies, making it a fitting location for such groundbreaking tests.
Commercial Launch
The ultimate goal remains the commercial launch by late 2026 in several major U.S. cities beyond Los Angeles. This ambitious timeline reflects both companies' confidence in their autonomous vehicle technology and readiness to bring this service to market.
